Some of the most powerful learning often comes in small, memorable moments— and the CALM team calls them “golden nuggets”. These are the insights that shift thinking, open hearts, and spark meaningful change in early childhood environments.
Recent trainings gave educators an opportunity to share their key takeaways—reflections that reveal both the depth of the training and its practical value in real-world classrooms/childcare settings.
What Educators Took Away

A major theme that emerged was a clearer understanding of how the brain influences behaviour. Explained through the lens of Dr. Daniel J. Siegel and Dr. Tina Payne Bryson work from The Whole-Brain Child, the “upstairs/downstairs brain" metaphor offers a simple, powerful way to visualize how a child’s brain responds under stress—and how adults can support emotional regulation and recovery.

There was also a shift in how behaviour was viewed—not as defiance, but as communication. Participants appreciated learning about how blame, anger, and other emotional expressions are often protective mechanisms, and how a trauma-informed lens can reframe the entire approach to guidance and discipline.

In addition to theory, educators praised the practical tools and strategies offered—especially the use of games, rhythm, puppetry, and visual supports. These elements made the curriculum feel accessible and immediately implementable. Educators felt validated in practices they were already using, while also gaining new tools to expand their toolkit.
The training also encouraged reflection on language and tone—how the way we speak to children can either support or hinder emotional growth. There was a strong appreciation for strategies that promote connection before correction and help foster a growth mindset in both children and adults.
Many participants left not only with new ideas, but with a renewed curiosity—wanting to learn more about executive functioning, emotional inhibition, attachment, and the deeper neuroscience behind self-regulation.
Why It Matters
These golden nuggets are more than just insights; they form the foundation for transformation. The CALM team is always excited to receive participants' insights and welcomes new information and feedback to maintain the organic essence and continued relevance of CALM.
